Description
The Mossberg 500 Bantam Field/Deer Combo is built around a shooter who is still growing into the sport — or any adult who finds a standard-length stock awkward to mount quickly. The Bantam configuration uses a shortened length of pull, so the gun comes to the shoulder naturally rather than requiring the shooter to reach. That ergonomic adjustment matters most during a hunt when you need to mount and fire without thinking about fit.
The combo format addresses a real practical question: a field barrel optimized for bird and small game loads, and a Slugster barrel for deer season, without buying two separate guns. The 24-inch vent-rib field barrel keeps swing weight manageable on flying targets, while the 22-inch ported Slugster barrel includes adjustable rifle-style sights suited to slug accuracy at deer distances — the porting helps take some edge off the sharper recoil that slugs produce in a lighter gun. Swapping barrels on the 500 platform is a tool-free operation, which makes the combo genuinely useful rather than just a marketing bundle.
The top-tang safety sits directly under the thumb of either hand, so righthanded and lefthanded shooters operate it identically without repositioning their grip. The blued finish requires reasonable care in wet conditions but holds up well with normal maintenance. Wood furniture keeps the overall aesthetic traditional and the weight honest. At 20 gauge, the gun is forgiving enough for a newer shooter while still being a capable hunting tool that an experienced hand won’t feel undergunned with for upland birds or whitetail at moderate range.
