Description

The Mossberg 990 Aftershock is built for situations where a full-size shotgun is a liability—vehicle storage, confined spaces, or any role where compactness matters more than a long sight radius. It fills the same tactical niche as the pump-action Shockwave but swaps manual cycling for a semi-automatic gas system, which means the action resets on its own between shots and the shooter’s attention stays on the target rather than the pump stroke.

That gas system does more than speed up follow-up shots. By bleeding propellant gas to cycle the action, it absorbs and redistributes a portion of the recoil impulse that would otherwise arrive at the shooter all at once—a meaningful difference when you’re running a short, lightweight platform in 12 gauge. Mossberg coats the gas piston with nickel boron, a finish that reduces friction and resists fouling so the action stays consistent across a long string of fire without constant cleaning.

The AfterShock grip includes a rubberized palm pad specifically to manage felt recoil at the shooter’s hand, and the strapped forend with Mossberg’s own texturing gives the support hand something to anchor against under load. M-LOK slots on the magazine tube extension let you mount a light or other accessory without adapters. The beveled loading port and elongated elevator make topping off under stress noticeably faster than a standard port geometry would allow.

This particular variant pairs with a Crimson Trace Lasersaddle that wraps the receiver and projects a green laser—useful for low-light work where raising the gun to a traditional cheek weld is impractical. The LPA front fiber optic sight provides a conventional daytime aiming reference when the laser isn’t needed. The ambidextrous safety carries a red visual indicator so you can confirm its state without taking your eyes off the threat.
