Description
The MVP Patrol is Mossberg’s answer to a compact, magazine-fed bolt gun built around the .308 Winchester cartridge — a platform suited to hunters who work in tight cover, precision shooters who want a maneuverable field rifle, and anyone who already runs AR-10 or SR-25 pattern magazines and wants to consolidate their logistics. The MVP’s defining feature is its ability to accept standard detachable box magazines in that family, so spare capacity is easy to source and swap without proprietary hardware.
The 16.25-inch barrel keeps the overall package short without sacrificing enough velocity to matter for most hunting and practical shooting distances. Bolt-action feeding eliminates the cycling demands that shorter barrels impose on gas-operated designs, so there is no trade-off in reliability from the reduced length — the action cycles exactly the same regardless of how much barrel is ahead of it. The 1-in-10 twist rate is a conventional choice for .308 that stabilizes the full range of common projectile weights, from 150-grain hunting loads up through 175-grain match bullets, giving the shooter flexibility in ammunition selection without needing to chase an optimal twist for a single load. The blued finish on the barrel and action is conventional carbon steel protection; it handles field use well but rewards occasional maintenance in wet conditions more than a stainless or cerakoted surface would.
The fiber optic front sight provides a fast, high-visibility acquisition point in low light without a battery or mount. The lever-style safety is straightforward to operate under a scope or with gloves. The rifle ships with one 10-round magazine, and the action accepts one additional round in the chamber for an 11-round total ready count.
