Description

The K9 16″ is built for shooters who want a full-length rifle that stays manageable under sustained fire and pairs cleanly with a suppressor. Rosco developed this barrel in collaboration with Barrel & Hatchet, and the design reflects a deliberate set of trade-offs rather than a spec-sheet compromise.

The most consequential choice here is the intermediate-length gas system. On a 16-inch barrel, most manufacturers default to mid-length or carbine. Running intermediate pulls the gas port slightly rearward from where a mid-length port would sit, which extends the dwell time just enough to soften the recoil impulse and slow the bolt carrier’s rearward velocity — the result is a flatter, more controllable shot cycle, particularly during rapid follow-up work. The gas port is also sized to function reliably both suppressed and unsuppressed, so adding a suppressor does not require swapping components or adjusting the system.

The barrel is machined from 416R stainless steel and finished with a salt bath nitride treatment. Stainless gives you a material that tolerates heat cycles well and tends to hold tight chamber dimensions over a barrel’s service life; nitride over stainless adds corrosion resistance and surface hardness without meaningfully altering the bore dimensions. The continuous taper profile shifts mass toward the chamber end rather than the muzzle, which improves the balance of the rifle when accessories are mounted at the front.

The 1:7-inch twist rate is optimized for heavier projectiles in the 5.56 NATO family — bullets in the 69- to 77-grain range stabilize reliably at that rate. Shooters running 55-grain ammunition will see it function without issue, though the rifling is not tuned for that bullet weight. The barrel ships with an intermediate-length gas tube and is threaded 1/2×28 at the muzzle.
