Description

The Rugged Suppressors Obsidian Piston is a replacement booster piston designed for use with the Obsidian 45 suppressor on semi-automatic handguns, where the barrel moves during the firing cycle. Most tilting-barrel and short-recoil pistol designs require a Nielsen device — a spring-loaded booster assembly — to allow the barrel to cycle normally with a suppressor attached. The piston is the forward component of that system, threading into the booster housing and mating with the host barrel’s muzzle threads.

Where many piston designs incorporate longitudinal slots to relieve gas pressure, this one uses a solid, non-slotted profile to maintain gas contact around the full circumference of the bore. That continuous seal prevents combustion gases from escaping forward along the piston body during the brief moment before the bullet exits, which is the primary source of gas blowback felt at the shooter’s face and hands. The practical result is a noticeably cleaner operating cycle, particularly on shorter-barreled hosts where unburned gas volume is higher.

The piston is machined from 17-4 stainless steel and heat treated, giving it the hardness needed to handle repeated mechanical cycling and the corrosion resistance expected in a component that lives inside a suppressor’s booster cavity. The copper finish is not merely cosmetic — it provides an additional layer of surface protection in a part that sees both propellant gases and direct metal-on-metal contact with the booster spring assembly.

For fixed-barrel platforms such as carbines or submachine guns, the booster spring serves no functional purpose and must be replaced with a fixed barrel spacer to maintain correct suppressor alignment and prevent damage to the booster assembly.
