Description
The Rugged Suppressors Obsidian Piston is a replacement and upgrade piston designed for shooters running a suppressor on a tilt-barrel pistol platform. Many factory pistons use a slotted design that allows combustion gases to escape around the piston face during the dwell period; this piston eliminates that path entirely with a non-slotted profile that forms a complete circumference seal against the suppressor bore. The practical result is a meaningful reduction in gas blowback — the rearward push of hot gas into the action and toward the shooter’s face that is a common complaint when running suppressed on short-barreled or tilt-barrel handguns.
Construction is 17-4 stainless steel, heat treated after machining. That combination gives the part the corrosion resistance appropriate for a component that sees both high-pressure gas and repeated cleaning solvents, while the heat treatment raises hardness to handle the mechanical loading of the piston cycling against the suppressor mount under sustained fire.
The .578×28 thread pitch is the standard used on many popular 9mm pistol suppressors, making this piston a direct swap for shooters whose host firearm threads at that pitch. One installation note worth knowing: if you intend to use this piston on a fixed-barrel platform — a carbine or submachine gun format rather than a tilting-barrel pistol — the standard spring should be replaced with a fixed-barrel spacer to maintain proper timing and prevent bolt over-travel.
