Sellier & Bellot’s 7×57 SPCE load is built around a Semi-Jacketed Soft Point Cutting Edge bullet designed for hunters pursuing light to medium game. The “cutting edge” construction is the defining feature here: the jacket is mechanically locked to the lead core at the bullet’s nose, which keeps the two from separating on impact even when the projectile strikes at an angle or passes through brush before reaching the animal. That same design feature also shapes the wound channel — the cutting edge opens a clean entrance and promotes reliable bleeding, making it easier to track a hit animal through heavy cover.

At 173 grains, this is on the heavier end of what the 7×57 cartridge is commonly loaded to, and that mass carries practical advantages in the field. Heavier projectiles in this bore diameter retain energy more efficiently at distance and tend to drive deeper through muscle and bone than lighter, faster alternatives — a meaningful trade-off when the goal is reliable terminal performance on deer-sized game rather than flat trajectory at extended range. The sectional density of 0.306 reflects that penetration potential; a high sectional density means more mass is concentrated behind a given frontal area, which translates directly to how well the bullet maintains momentum through resistance.
