Description
The standard mil-spec bolt catch is a functional part, but its narrow paddle and smooth surface make it genuinely difficult to operate quickly — especially under stress or with gloves on. Seekins Precision designed this Enhanced Bolt Catch as a direct drop-in replacement for any mil-spec AR-15 lower receiver, addressing that ergonomic shortcoming without requiring modifications to the receiver itself.
The catch is built from 8620 steel and finished in Melonite QPQ, a salt-bath nitriding process that hardens the surface and provides corrosion resistance while maintaining dimensional tolerances. The material choice matters here: 8620 is a low-alloy steel that responds well to case hardening, giving the catch a tough outer shell with a more ductile core that resists cracking under the repetitive impact stress a bolt catch sees in service.
The functional improvement centers on an oversized, diamond-textured paddle. The added surface area and aggressive texture give your thumb a more positive purchase when locking the bolt back or releasing it, and the geometry of the lower paddle makes it easier to engage from below when stripping in a fresh magazine and releasing the bolt. This is a particularly relevant upgrade if you run a rifle with a larger handguard or thicker gloves, where reaching and actuating a standard-profile catch becomes a two-step fumble. Installation follows standard mil-spec procedure; the catch itself is all that is included, so you will need the roll pin and spring from your existing assembly or a lower parts kit. No mounting hardware is bundled with the part.
