Description
The P220 is the pistol that established SIG SAUER’s reputation in the American market, and this variant is aimed at shooters who want a full-size, metal-frame duty gun chambered in .45 ACP rather than chasing magazine capacity with a double-stack design. The single-stack layout keeps the grip circumference manageable for a wider range of hand sizes, and the alloy frame takes meaningful weight off without sacrificing the rigidity that a steel slide demands.
The slide is machined from barstock rather than cast or stamped, which means the internal geometry is cut to dimension rather than approximated through a mold. SIG coats it in Nitron, their proprietary wear-resistant finish, which holds up against the corrosion and holster wear a duty or carry gun accumulates over time. The frame includes an integral accessory rail so lights and lasers mount without an adapter.
Mechanically, the P220 runs a double-action/single-action trigger rather than a striker. The first shot breaks from a longer, heavier double-action pull with the hammer down; subsequent shots are single-action as the cycling slide cocks the hammer. A decocking lever drops the hammer safely without requiring the shooter to pull the trigger, which is the safety architecture this platform uses in place of a traditional thumb safety. The four-point safety system also includes a passive firing pin block, a safety intercept notch, and a trigger bar disconnector — meaning the gun resists discharge from impact or from any single component failure. SIGLITE night sights come standard, giving the shooter a tritium-illuminated sight picture in low light without any additional hardware.
