When a suppressor adds mass and length to the muzzle, it interferes with the barrel’s ability to recoil rearward and unlock from the slide — the piston solves that by acting as a Nielsen device, a spring-loaded interface that decouples the suppressor’s inertia from the barrel’s unlocking motion and lets the action cycle normally.
This particular piston is machined from 17-4 stainless steel and then heat-treated, a combination that puts hardness where the repeated hammering of cycling demands it while keeping corrosion resistance in a part that sits close to propellant gas. The female threading on the piston mates directly to a SilencerCo-compatible threaded barrel, keeping the interface tight and concentric. The XL designation means the body is 0.25 inches longer than a standard piston — relevant when a specific pistol’s geometry puts the threaded muzzle closer to the suppressor body than a standard-length piston can bridge. If your host firearm has a fixed barrel rather than a tilting one, a Fixed Barrel Spacer substitutes for the piston’s spring function.
The M13.5×1 left-hand thread pattern is sized for host firearms that use that particular muzzle specification. Thread pitch affects both seating torque and how reliably the piston stays indexed under the rotational forces of firing; the left-hand orientation is a deliberate engineering choice on certain platforms to resist unscrewing under normal use.
