The Steiner Predator 10×42 is built around one central use case: putting glass on game in the kind of light that separates a productive hunt from a wasted one. Early mornings and late evenings are where deer and hogs move, and that is precisely where a binocular’s optical design gets tested. Steiner’s Predator diamond coating — a proprietary treatment applied to the glass — is engineered to push light transmission and contrast higher than an uncoated or standard multicoated surface would allow, which matters most when the sun is below the treeline and your window is closing fast.

The 10x magnification fixes this as a glassing tool rather than a general-purpose bino. You give up some field of view compared to an 8x, but you gain the ability to read an animal’s antler frame or body condition at distances where a lower power would leave you guessing. The 42mm objective diameter is a practical middle ground: large enough to gather sufficient light for dawn and dusk use, but not so heavy that a full day on the mountain becomes a chore. At 26.5 ounces, the Predator is substantial but not punishing.

The housing is wrapped in NBR Long Life rubber armoring — a nitrile-butadiene compound that holds up to oils, solvents, and hard contact better than standard rubber. The chassis itself is Makrolon, a polycarbonate material that keeps weight down without sacrificing structural integrity. Steiner seals the internals with their N2 injection system, pumping dry nitrogen in at 14 psi to prevent internal fogging regardless of temperature swings. The ClicLoc attachment system lets you swap between a neck strap and a harness without tools, and the binocular hangs parallel to your body so it stays out of the way until you need it.
