The SureFire EP7 Sonic Defenders Ultra are filtered reusable earplugs built for shooters, industrial workers, and anyone who needs hearing protection without going deaf to their surroundings. The core design problem they solve is the binary choice most earplugs force on you — full block or nothing. The EP7 handles it differently.

With the filter caps removed, a proprietary acoustic filter inside each earpiece allows sounds at safe levels to pass through normally while automatically attenuating anything above 85 dB. The attenuation scales with the intensity of the incoming noise, so a conversation reads as a conversation and a gunshot reads as something that needs to be damped — without you doing anything. Put the filter caps back in and you get the full 28 dB NRR, which shifts out lower-frequency ambient noise on top of the impact protection. That makes the two-mode system genuinely useful rather than a marketing distinction: caps out for a range session where you need to hear commands and range officers, caps in for sustained high-noise environments where situational awareness isn’t the priority.

Retention is handled by SureFire’s patented EarLock rings, which use seven contact points against the concha bowl rather than relying entirely on canal friction. The Comply Canal Tips are soft memory foam, so they compress, seat, and hold a seal without the discomfort of hard plastic. The body is hypoallergenic medical-grade polymer. Because the profile is low, they stay put under a helmet or hat and don’t interfere with cheek weld. They’re also compatible with several radio communication systems for users who need to run comms alongside hearing protection.
