Description
The Recon Tactical is Wilson Combat’s general-purpose AR-15 barrel, suited to anyone who wants a single barrel that handles both sustained training sessions and hunting applications without compromising either. Its medium profile sits between a pencil barrel and a heavy varmint contour, which means it sheds heat better than a lightweight tube under rapid fire without adding the carry penalty of a bull barrel.
The fluting along the exterior does two things simultaneously: it removes material to reduce overall weight, and it increases the surface area exposed to air, which helps the steel dissipate heat faster during high round-count strings. The barrel is machined from 416R stainless steel — a rifle-rated grade chosen for its dimensional stability and its ability to hold chamber and bore tolerances through temperature swings that would cause less uniform material to shift. The glass bead finish produces a matte, non-reflective surface without adding a coating layer that could affect heat transfer.
The 1-8 twist rate is the critical selection decision here. A faster twist like 1-8 stabilizes heavier projectiles — think 69- to 77-grain match bullets — that a slower 1-9 or 1-12 twist would leave marginally stabilized. It still handles standard 55-grain loads, but this barrel is optimized for shooters who prefer heavier, higher-BC projectiles for longer-range work or hunting. The intermediate-length gas system, as opposed to a carbine-length system, bleeds pressure from a point farther down the bore, which reduces bolt carrier velocity at unlocking and softens the felt impulse of the recoil cycle — a meaningful difference over extended range sessions. Muzzle threads are cut at 1/2-28, the standard AR-15 pattern for this caliber, accepting the full range of compatible muzzle devices.
