Description

The Yankee Hill Machine Phantom Comp/Brake is a dual-purpose muzzle device that handles recoil reduction and muzzle rise simultaneously — something a standard A2-style flash hider isn’t designed to do. The five-port arrangement vents propellant gas upward and to the sides, countering the tendency of the muzzle to climb during rapid fire and letting you reacquire your sight picture faster between shots.

The deliberate absence of any downward-facing port is a practical field consideration: gas directed into loose soil or dust at the muzzle creates a signature that gives away a shooter’s position. By keeping all ports above the bore centerline, this design keeps that disturbance to a minimum when firing from prone.

The 5M1 variant — this one — retains the aggressively scalloped front face rather than the smoother profile of the 5M2. That geometry serves a secondary purpose in close-quarters situations where the muzzle end of the rifle may need to function as an impact tool. The tradeoff is that the open cuts are slightly more prone to snagging on gear than a rounded profile would be; the smoother 5M2 exists precisely for shooters who prioritize snag-free handling.

Construction is 4140 steel with a Black Oxide finish, and the device ships with a crush washer for installation. One clear-eyed note: this device does not suppress muzzle flash. If flash reduction is the priority, a dedicated flash hider is the right tool. The Phantom Comp/Brake is built for shooters who want flatter-shooting performance and are willing to accept that trade. Thread pitch is 1/2″x28, standard for 5.56mm AR-platform rifles.
