The Recon is Walker’s answer to shooters and hunters who want a low-profile electronic muff that does not sacrifice protection for packability. The over-the-head design keeps the profile slim enough to stay clear of rifle stocks and shotgun combs without loosening its grip on your head during movement.

At the center of how the Recon works is Sound Activated Compression, which closes off amplification the moment a report hits the microphones. The compression is fast enough that the sharp transient of a gunshot is attenuated before it reaches your ears, while ordinary conversation and ambient sounds pass through at a boosted level. That amplification is handled by a digital circuit rather than an analog one, which means the signal processing adds less coloration and noise floor to what you hear — useful when you are trying to pick out footsteps or a distant call in the field.

The composite housing is fitted with a bonded rubber coating that adds a layer of damping to structure-borne vibration, supplementing the acoustic seal of the cups themselves. An NRR of 26 dB puts the Recon solidly in the range appropriate for centerfire rifle and handgun use. Full dynamic range HD speakers and MEMS microphones handle the reproduction side, keeping the sound of voices and environment clear rather than tinny. An IPX4 weather-resistance rating means rain and light spray will not shut the muffs down mid-session. A 3.5mm audio input lets you route a radio or phone through the same speakers. Auto shutoff is selectable at two, four, or six hours, and the muffs run on two AAA batteries included in the box.
