The Ballistic Advantage Premium Series Hanson barrel is built for the AR-15 shooter who wants a capable, no-compromise general-purpose rifle — one that handles everything from range work to practical shooting without hauling unnecessary weight. The Hanson profile was designed by Clint Hanson to remove material strategically along the barrel’s length so that each section carries only as much steel as the forces at that point actually require. The result is a barrel that feels noticeably lighter in the hand than a government or HBAR profile without the stiffness penalties associated with pencil or lightweight contours.

The mid-length gas system draws propellant gas from a point farther down the bore than a carbine-length setup, which spreads the pressure curve over a longer dwell time and a longer stroke. In practice, that means the bolt carrier is moving more slowly when it begins to extract, which reduces the sharpness of felt recoil and puts less stress on the case head at the moment of unlocking. It also gives the shooter a slightly softer impulse to manage, which matters across a long range session.

The 1-in-8 twist rate stabilizes projectiles across a wide range of bullet weights — it handles everything from common 55-grain loads up through the heavier 77-grain match bullets that push the practical ceiling of the .223 Wylde chamber. That chambering itself is worth noting: it accepts both .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO ammunition while maintaining tighter chamber dimensions than a standard 5.56 NATO barrel, which supports better consistency with match-grade .223 loads.

The barrel is machined from 416R stainless steel and finished in QPQ, a salt-bath nitride process that penetrates the steel surface rather than sitting on top of it. Feed ramps are Nickel Boron coated M4 extensions. The gas block journal is sized for standard .750-inch low-profile gas blocks.
