Modern free-float handguards run thin by design, which keeps weight down and improves heat dissipation in theory — but in practice, sustained fire pushes surface temperatures high enough to make a bare handguard uncomfortable fast. The Cole-TAC SD Handguard Wrap is built to address that directly. It sits between your support hand and the handguard, acting as a thermal break rather than letting heat conduct straight into your grip.

The wrap is constructed from two layers of laser-cut Squadron material that are laminated together. That double-layer build gives the wrap enough structural body to stay in position and maintain its shape under use, while the Squadron material itself resists the heat that builds up during extended strings of fire. The slots variant uses a slotted attachment method to secure the wrap to the handguard, which keeps it indexed and prevents it from shifting during firing or weapon manipulation.

This is a practical accessory for anyone running an AR-style rifle in conditions where round count climbs — training courses, range sessions with little time between strings, or hunting situations where you may not have the option to let the rifle cool.
