It starts from the same direct-impingement, rotating-bolt gas system Colt supplies to military and law enforcement customers, which keeps the operating cycle mechanically simple and parts universally available. The mid-length gas system on this carbine slightly delays bolt carrier movement compared to a carbine-length setup, which translates to a softer impulse at the shoulder and reduced wear on the bolt carrier group over a high round count.

The chrome-lined bore matters most if this rifle sees hard use, intermittent cleaning schedules, or corrosive conditions. Chrome lining is harder than raw steel and sheds fouling more readily, so the barrel holds its accuracy longer under sustained fire. The 1-in-7-inch twist rate stabilizes heavier projectiles—62-grain and above—reliably, while still handling standard 55-grain loads without issue, which keeps your ammunition options broad rather than forcing a specific load.

Colt fitted this variant entirely in Flat Dark Earth Magpul furniture: MOE SL handguards, MOE SL carbine stock, MOE SL pistol grip, and a vertical grip. The MOE SL handguard keeps the profile slim enough for a standard firing grip without an optic rail cluttering the sides, while the flip-up Magpul back-up sight gives you a usable iron sight baseline before you mount any optic. The MOE SL stock adjusts to six positions, so the same rifle fits a range of shooters or accommodates different layers of clothing without swapping parts. The result is a rifle that leaves the box configured and ready rather than serving as a stripped starting point.
