Description
The Colt M5 Carbine is built for shooters who want a factory rifle that starts where most mil-spec builds leave off. It shares a lineage with the M4 platform but departs from it meaningfully in the receiver design: both the upper and lower have been redesigned from the ground up to incorporate fully ambidextrous controls, so left-handed shooters and those trained on ambi setups are not working around the rifle — they are working with it.
The free-float rail system is the more consequential engineering choice here. By decoupling the handguard from the barrel, pressure applied to the forend during a supported or slung shot cannot transfer to the barrel and shift point of impact. The practical result is that the rifle shoots to the same point of aim whether your support hand is gripping hard or barely touching. The M-LOK interface along the rail lets you add lights, grips, or bipods without adding bulk where you do not need it.
The carbine-length gas system drives a dwell-time and pressure balance suited to 16-inch barrels — it runs reliably across a wide range of factory ammunition without the sharper impulse associated with pistol-length gas on the same barrel length. The 1-in-7 twist rate is optimized for heavier projectiles in the 62- to 77-grain range, making this a natural match for M855 and similar duty-weight loads rather than light varmint bullets. Flip-up front and rear sights are included, leaving the top rail unobstructed for whatever optic you intend to run while providing a viable backup option if that optic fails. The included 30-round Magpul PMAG is a functional choice from the factory rather than a proprietary magazine you would eventually replace.
