The DD4 RIII is Daniel Defense’s answer to a recurring problem in the AR-15 market: how to build a compact, duty-capable rifle without sacrificing the handling qualities that make a mid-length platform worth shooting. It suits experienced shooters who want a proven configuration they can run hard without second-guessing the components underneath.

The mid-length gas system is the mechanical decision that defines how this rifle behaves at the range. Compared to a carbine-length system on the same barrel, mid-length tubing extends the point at which gas taps off, giving the bolt carrier more time to travel before pressure peaks. The practical result is a softer, more linear push during cycling and reduced wear on the bolt and carrier over sustained use—not a dramatic difference on any single shot, but one that accumulates meaningfully over a rifle’s service life.

The 12.5-inch RIS III rail ships in FDE and uses M-LOK attachment points, letting you mount accessories without fixed rail sections adding weight where you don’t need them. The receiver is machined from 7075-T6 aluminum, and the stock uses Daniel Defense’s Soft Touch overmolding on a collapsible six-position buffer tube, which gives a firmer, less slippery grip surface in wet or cold conditions without adding hardware.

The 1-in-7 twist rate stabilizes projectiles on the heavier end of the .223/5.56 spectrum—bullets in the 62- to 77-grain range seat best here. Lighter 55-grain loads will run reliably, but the twist is optimized for heavier, longer projectiles rather than varmint-weight ammunition. The rifle ships without sights, which is the right call for a platform built around optics-ready use—your rail space and zero stay clean from the start.
