The Daniel Defense DD4 RIII URG is a complete upper receiver group built for shooters who want a short-barreled AR-15 platform in a form that does not sacrifice durability or reliability. It suits those building a dedicated close-quarters rifle on a quality lower, or those upgrading a factory upper with a known-quantity assembly from a manufacturer with a long record of contract work.

The 11.5-inch barrel runs a carbine-length gas system. At that barrel length, a carbine gas port sits closer to the muzzle than a mid-length would, which increases bolt velocity and typically produces a sharper, snappier recoil impulse compared to what the same load delivers in a longer-barreled mid-length setup. That trade-off is the cost of the compact envelope. The barrel is treated with salt bath nitride, a process that hardens the bore surface and provides corrosion resistance without adding the dimensional variability that a thick chrome lining can introduce.

A 1-in-7-inch twist rate stabilizes heavier projectiles reliably — it handles 62-grain and 77-grain bullets without difficulty — though shooters who favor light 55-grain loads will still see adequate performance. The barrel profile is government contour, which tapers under the handguard and thickens forward of the gas block, a geometry that balances weight savings with enough mass ahead of the gas block to resist harmonic shift under sustained fire.

The upper ships with an M-LOK handguard, a bolt carrier group, and a flash suppressor already installed, making it a ready-to-mount assembly rather than a stripped upper requiring additional components.
