The Daniel Defense RIS III in Flat Dark Earth is built for shooters who want a free-floating handguard that traces its lineage directly to the two-piece RIS II platform adopted by U.S. Special Operations Command, but without carrying the weight penalty that came with that original design. The RIS III answers a practical question: how do you keep a proven, rigid attachment system and shed material at the same time? The answer is M-LOK. By moving away from continuous Picatinny slots on the sides and bottom, Daniel Defense opens seven attachment positions along the handguard’s length while removing the aluminum that those full rails would have required. You still get an uninterrupted Mil-Spec 1913 Picatinny rail running the full length of the top, so optics and offsets mount without any gap or step between the upper receiver and the handguard.

The attachment method matters as much as the material. A six-bolt Bolt-Up system draws the handguard firmly against the upper receiver, and Grade 8 military-specification fasteners hold that joint under sustained fire. The steel barrel nut is part of the same patented system, and the geometry is backward compatible with the RIS II Bolt-Up plate and lower rail, meaning this handguard can drop into an existing RIS II-equipped build without replacing the barrel nut. Integrated QD swivel attachment points on both sides of the handguard give sling options without adding hardware. Construction throughout is aircraft-grade 6061-T6 aluminum with a hardcoat anodized Flat Dark Earth finish — note that because of how anodization interacts with batch variation, the exact shade can shift slightly toward brown between production runs.
