Description

The MK18 is Daniel Defense’s answer to a specific problem: how do you build a short-barreled AR-pattern rifle that functions reliably across a wide range of conditions without sacrificing the handling qualities that make a compact firearm worth carrying in the first place. This is a purpose-built close-quarters tool, not a trimmed-down general-purpose carbine, and it rewards shooters who understand that distinction.

The 10.3-inch cold hammer forged barrel is chrome-moly vanadium steel with a chrome-lined bore, which resists erosion from sustained firing and simplifies cleaning without requiring the shooter to coddle the surface. A carbine-length direct impingement gas system on a barrel this short runs at higher port pressure than a mid-length setup would, which is a trade-off Daniel Defense manages through an H buffer — the added weight slows the bolt carrier just enough to smooth out the cycle and reduce felt snap at the rear of the receiver. The 1-in-7-inch twist rate stabilizes heavier projectiles effectively, meaning this rifle handles 77-grain match bullets as well as standard 62-grain M855, giving the shooter real flexibility in ammunition selection.

The MK18 RIS II handguard is a full-length Picatinny quad rail, the same configuration Daniel Defense supplies to USSOCOM, which means accessory placement is not constrained by a proprietary attachment system. The upper and lower receivers are CNC-machined from 7075-T6 aluminum with Type III hard coat anodizing. The GRIP-N-RIP charging handle operates ambidextrously, and the Daniel Defense buttstock and pistol grip are glass-filled polymer with soft-touch overmolding. Sights are sold separately.
