Federal’s Shorty Shotshell rifled slug load is built for shooters who want to run a standard 12-gauge in situations where managing a full-length shell isn’t ideal — whether that’s running a tube magazine loader faster, reducing felt recoil for newer shooters, or simply exploring what a compact shotshell can do at the range. At 1-3/4 inches, these are among the shortest commercially produced 12-gauge shells available, and Federal’s engineering goal was straightforward: deliver performance that tracks closely with full-size slug loads rather than treating the short hull as a compromise.

The projectile is a rifled hollow point slug weighing 438 grains and leaving the muzzle at 1,200 feet per second. That’s meaningful energy on target — 1,400 foot-pounds at the muzzle — and the hollow point design is intended to promote controlled expansion on impact rather than simply punching through. The rifled slug format means the projectile carries its own spin stabilization, so accuracy is not solely dependent on a rifled barrel, though a rifled choke or barrel will generally tighten groups. The ballistic coefficient of .110 reflects the blunt profile typical of shotgun slugs, so trajectory drops off more steeply beyond 75 yards than a rifle bullet would; this is a short-to-medium range proposition by design.
