Description

Hornady’s American Whitetail line was built around one purpose: putting deer on the ground with factory ammunition that doesn’t require handloading expertise to shoot well. The .450 Bushmaster chambering makes this load particularly relevant for hunters in states where straight-walled cartridges are required for rifle deer seasons, and the 245-grain bullet weight is well-suited to the cartridge’s design intent at typical whitetail distances.

The projectile is Hornady’s InterLock Jacketed Soft Point. The InterLock system uses a raised ring inside the jacket that mechanically locks it to the lead core, preventing the two from separating on impact. That retention matters when a bullet hits bone or enters at an angle — core-jacket separation can cut expansion short and reduce penetration. The soft-point nose initiates expansion immediately on contact without relying on a polymer tip, which keeps the bullet performing predictably across a range of impact velocities as distance increases.

At the muzzle the load generates 2,633 ft-lbs of energy, which is substantial for a straight-walled cartridge and gives it a comfortable margin of terminal performance out to realistic field ranges. Brass cases are boxer-primed and non-corrosive, so the cases are reloadable for handloaders who want to continue working with a bullet they’ve already confirmed performs well in the field. The 20-round box count is standard for a hunting load — enough for a season’s use with rounds left for pre-season confirmation of zero.
