Description

Hornady’s Critical Defense line was developed with a specific problem in mind: conventional hollow points can pack with heavy clothing fibers on the way to the target, which prevents the cavity from opening and turns an expanding bullet into a non-expanding one. The FTX bullet addresses this by filling the hollow point cavity with a resilient polymer tip. That tip initiates expansion on contact regardless of what the bullet passed through to get there, and it does so consistently across a wide range of impact velocities — a meaningful consideration in a rifle cartridge that may be fired from a shorter barrel where velocity bleeds off faster than the published figures suggest.

The nickel-plated brass casing serves two practical purposes beyond appearance. Nickel is harder than bare brass, which makes extraction more reliable in semi-automatic actions where the case is under stress during the ejection cycle, and it resists the corrosion that can develop when loaded ammunition is stored for extended periods in carry or home-defense roles. The propellant charge is tuned to reduce both felt recoil and muzzle flash, the latter being a significant tactical consideration if this ammunition is kept for low-light or no-light defensive use.
