Description

Precision Hunter is Hornady’s answer to a specific problem: hunting ammunition that holds together at close range without coming apart before it expands at distance. The 103-grain ELD-X bullet at the center of this load is built around a Heat Shield tip, a polymer insert hard enough to resist the aerodynamic heating that causes conventional polymer tips to deform in flight. That deformation changes a bullet’s ballistic coefficient mid-trajectory, and in a hunting context it can mean the difference between a predicted impact point and a miss at longer ranges. The Heat Shield tip maintains its geometry, so the BC the bullet leaves the muzzle with is effectively the BC it carries to the target.

The ELD-X is a dual-purpose design, not a compromise between two extremes. At higher impact velocities — closer shots — the bullet’s interlock-style jacket initiates expansion reliably and controls it through a significant portion of the bullet’s length, retaining enough mass to drive deep. At lower impact velocities typical of longer shots, the construction is still engineered to expand rather than pencil through. Hornady refers to this as effective terminal performance across all practical ranges, and the jacket architecture is what makes both ends of that window work.

The propellant charge is selected and loaded to minimize shot-to-shot variation and to remain consistent across a range of temperatures — relevant for hunters who may be glassing a hillside in cold morning air and taking a shot hours later in warmer conditions. The 6mm Creedmoor chambering gives this load a flat trajectory and manageable recoil in a cartridge well-suited to medium and large thin-skinned game at extended distances. Each box contains 20 rounds.
