Description

Hornady’s Superformance line was built around a single premise: push standard bullet weights to velocities that typically require a longer barrel, without asking the shooter to accept more recoil or muzzle blast. For the varmint hunter running a .223 Rem rifle, that means the 50-grain CX bullet leaves the muzzle at 3,300 fps — a figure achieved through a proprietary propellant blend rather than simply packing more powder into the case. The result is a flatter arc at hunting distances, which compresses the margin for error on ranging a target animal.

The bullet itself is the other half of the story. CX stands for Copper Alloy eXpanding — a monolithic copper construction with a polymer tip. Unlike a conventional lead-core varmint bullet that can shed jacket material unpredictably, the monolithic body holds together through the initial impact event before the tip drives the nose back to initiate controlled, radial expansion. That consistency makes terminal performance more repeatable across varying impact velocities — relevant when shots on a prairie dog or ground squirrel might come at fifty yards or two hundred. The copper construction also means no lead core to deform the bullet in the magazine or during feeding, which matters for shooters running semi-autos where rounds cycle under spring tension.

Cases are reloadable, so handloaders can recover brass after the hunt. Each box contains 20 rounds.
