Description
The Mossberg Patriot Predator in .400 Legend is built for hunters who want a capable short-range and mid-range cartridge in a lightweight, maneuverable bolt-action package. The .400 Legend was developed for hunting medium to large game at typical woodland distances, and it delivers a wide, heavy-for-caliber bullet at moderate velocity — a profile that transfers energy efficiently on deer-sized animals without generating the recoil of magnum cartridges.
The 20-inch barrel is a deliberate choice for this application. Compared to a 22- or 24-inch hunting barrel, the shorter tube costs a small amount of muzzle velocity but pays it back in handling: the rifle is easier to swing in tight cover, lighter to carry in the field, and noticeably more balanced. With the .400 Legend’s relatively short powder column, most of the useful burn happens well before the muzzle, so the velocity trade-off is modest in practice.
The 1-in-16 twist rate is calibrated for the .400 Legend’s bullet weights. A slower twist like this stabilizes the longer, heavier projectiles the cartridge is designed around without over-spinning lighter options. Handloaders selecting bullets should target the heavier end of the .400 Legend spectrum to take full advantage of that stability.
The barrel is threaded, so a suppressor or muzzle device can be added without gunsmithing. No sights are included from the factory, and the receiver is topped with a Picatinny rail, which gives you a wide range of scope mount options. The trigger is user-adjustable, a meaningful advantage when dialing in a hunting zero — a pull weight matched to the shooter reduces flinch and improves cold-bore consistency. The synthetic stock in Flat Dark Earth keeps weight down and holds up in wet field conditions without the warping risk of unfinished wood.
