Otis Technologies makes these 2.5-inch square patches from 100% cotton, which absorbs solvent and fouling more thoroughly than synthetic alternatives and releases it without dragging streaks of residue back across the bore wall. That streak-free wipe matters most when you are trying to read a patch for copper or carbon after a solvent soak — a smeared result tells you nothing useful.

The square geometry is designed specifically for use with solid rod cleaning jags. When a jag pushes a square patch through a bore, the corners fold and conform to the rifling lands, keeping consistent pressure across the contact surface for the full length of the stroke. Otis offers a separate round patch format intended for their pull-through Ripcord systems; these square patches are not interchangeable for that purpose and are the correct choice when you are running a traditional rod-and-jag setup.

At 2.5 inches, this patch size covers a wide range of centerfire handgun and rifle calibers from 9mm and .38 through .45, 10mm, and .44 Magnum on the handgun side, and from .30 caliber through .458 on the rifle side including .308, .300 Win Mag, 7.62mm, and 8mm. If you are cleaning .22 rimfire or small-bore rifle cartridges, the 1-inch patch is the appropriate size, and shotgun bores call for the 3-inch version. Having the right patch size for your bore diameter prevents both under-coverage, where the patch skips over fouling, and excessive resistance that can dislodge the jag or stress the cleaning rod.
