The Rugged Suppressors Obsidian piston system exists to solve a practical problem: the Obsidian 45 and Obsidian 9 suppressors use a piston-driven mounting system, and that piston must be threaded to match the host barrel. If your pistol has a left-hand metric thread — common on several European and domestic designs — a standard piston simply will not work. This variant is cut to M16x1 left-hand pitch specifically for those hosts, letting you move a single suppressor between multiple pistols without purchasing an entirely separate can for each one.
The piston is machined from 17-4 stainless steel and then heat treated, which brings the material to a higher hardness than it would hold in its annealed state. That matters here because the piston seats directly against the suppressor’s booster assembly and cycles under pressure every shot. A softer material in that role tends to batter over time; harder steel resists the repeated impact loading that comes with sustained use.
The non-slotted design creates a full circumference gas seal around the piston. Slotted pistons bleed some gas by design, and while that can reduce felt movement in the slide, it also means more unburned gas venting rearward toward the shooter. The sealed geometry here keeps more of that gas directed forward through the suppressor, which generally means less blowback at the ejection port and a cleaner shooting environment. If your host barrel is threaded M16x1 left-hand and you are running an Obsidian 45 or Obsidian 9, this is the correct replacement or additional piston to have on hand.
