Sitting in the second focal plane means the reticle subtensions are only accurate at maximum magnification, which is a deliberate trade-off: the reticle stays visually clean and easy to read at lower power settings, making target acquisition faster when distance is uncertain.

The MOA BDC1 reticle is calibrated for minute-of-angle holds rather than milliradians, which suits shooters whose ballistic data and turret adjustments are already organized in MOA. BDC hash marks give you holdover reference points without requiring a full turret correction for every range increment, keeping the shooting process faster in field conditions. Because the reticle lives in the second focal plane, those hold points correspond to real-world distances only when the power ring is run to 16x — worth understanding before zeroing.

The 30mm main tube gives the internal adjustment system more mechanical travel than a standard 1-inch tube, which matters when you’re running significant elevation corrections for long-range work or need to dial out a cant without burning through the available range.
