Description
The Safariland Species is an inside-the-waistband holster built specifically for appendix carry with the Ruger Max-9. It is aimed at concealed carriers who want a purpose-fit holster rather than a universal design—the fitment is cut to the Max-9’s frame and trigger guard geometry, which matters for both retention feel and draw consistency.
The shell is formed from SafariLaminate, Safariland’s thermal-molded composite material. Thermal molding produces a shell that holds its shape under heat and pressure rather than softening or deforming against body heat over time, which keeps the trigger guard coverage consistent. A suede lining on the interior protects the firearm’s finish during repeated draws and cushions the gun against rattle and movement.
Retention is handled passively through the trigger guard—the holster clicks around the guard and holds the pistol without any lever or hood to manipulate on the draw. An adaptable tension device lets the user dial in how firmly the gun seats, which is useful for tuning the balance between draw speed and carry security. The mounting clip is both cantable and vertically adjustable, giving the wearer control over ride height and cant angle independently—two adjustments that matter considerably for comfort and draw angle during appendix carry. The clip is sized for 1.5-inch belt widths. A dedicated sight channel keeps standard-height sights clear of the shell edge so they do not snag during reholstering.
Right-hand orientation only. This holster is a straightforward, well-specified option for Max-9 owners who carry appendix and want predictable, adjustable retention without additional mechanical components on the draw stroke.
