Description

When you mount a suppressor to a new rifle or a freshly assembled host, you are introducing several threaded interfaces between the bore and the muzzle device — any one of which can introduce misalignment that redirects a bullet into the suppressor baffle stack. The SureFire SF-ROD-556 Bore Alignment Rod gives you a concrete way to check that the suppressor, adapter, and bore are all running concentric before the first round is ever fired.

The process is straightforward: with the weapon unloaded and the suppressor mounted, insert the rod through the suppressor and into the bore. The rod closely approximates the path a projectile would take, so any deviation in concentricity shows up as unequal spacing between the rod and the inner bore of the suppressor. If the gap is even all the way around, the setup is good. If it is not, you have identified a problem that would otherwise announce itself in a far more destructive way.

The rod is precision-machined from heat-treated stainless steel, which gives it the rigidity needed to hold a straight line through the suppressor without flex introducing false readings. SureFire machines it specifically for 5.56mm, so the rod diameter is matched to that bore rather than being a general-purpose gauge that approximates multiple calibers. That caliber-specific fit is what makes the check meaningful.

SureFire recommends running this verification on any new build or any suppressor setup that has not yet been fired. It is a one-time step per configuration — not something you repeat at every range session — but skipping it on initial setup removes the only reliable way to catch a misalignment problem before it damages the can.
