The bolt itself is machined from 9310 tool steel, a grade chosen for its combination of hardness and toughness. Harder steels resist wear at the locking lugs and bolt face but become brittle under impact; 9310 sits in a range that handles both. The carrier is made from 8620 steel, which is case-hardened for surface durability while retaining a tougher core. Both components receive a black nitride finish applied as a salt bath process, meaning the treatment penetrates the metal surface rather than sitting on top of it. That matters for longevity because there is no coating layer to chip or flake under the friction and heat of the bolt cycling.
The gas key is properly staked, which is a detail worth noting because an improperly staked key will back out screws over time and bleed gas, causing short-cycling. The carrier profile is full-auto, which carries slightly more mass than a semi-auto profile. That additional weight slows the bolt’s rearward travel, smoothing out the recoil impulse on carbine-length and shorter gas systems where dwell time is shorter and carrier velocity tends to run higher. The bolt’s ejector and extractor are machined rather than assembled from separate subcomponents, and the assembly is high-pressure tested before it leaves the factory.
