The Yankee Hill Machine Phantom is one of the more established muzzle devices in the AR-15 market, and the aggressive-end-cut variant—designated YHM-28-5C2—is the configuration designed with a toothed, serrated face that can function as a last-resort contact tool. That detail aside, the core engineering here is the five-port arrangement. Unlike the standard A2 birdcage, which has a solid bottom that is sometimes cited but inconsistently executed, the Phantom’s design deliberately eliminates any downward-facing port. The practical effect when shooting prone is a meaningful reduction in ground disturbance—less dirt and debris kicked up in front of the muzzle, which matters for both concealment and maintaining a clear sight picture under rapid fire.

The five ports also work as compensating vents, redirecting propellant gas upward and to the sides to counter muzzle rise. The result is a device that handles flash suppression and compensation simultaneously rather than forcing a choice between the two. Construction is 4140 steel with a Black Oxide finish, materials and a process that keep weight modest while providing adequate corrosion resistance for field use. A crush washer is included, so installation does not require sourcing additional hardware. At 1/2″-28 threading, it fits the standard AR-15 muzzle thread pattern directly. The Phantom adds 1.75 inches to effective barrel length, which is worth accounting for if overall length is a consideration in your build.
