Description

Gas tube replacements are rarely exciting until you need one — and when you do, fitting the right length matters. A mid-length gas system bleeds propellant gas from a point farther down the barrel than a carbine-length setup, which spreads the pressure curve over a longer dwell time. The practical result is a softer, more progressive push at the bolt carrier rather than the sharper, more abrupt impulse associated with carbine-length setups on the same barrel length. That difference becomes noticeable during sustained fire and can reduce wear on the bolt carrier group over time.

Yankee Hill Machine makes this tube from 304 stainless steel, then applies a Melonite finish — the same combination used as standard equipment on YHM-15 rifles. Melonite is a ferritic nitrocarburizing treatment that hardens the surface and provides corrosion resistance without adding meaningful wall thickness, keeping bore dimensions consistent for gas flow. The black appearance is a byproduct of the process rather than a separate paint or coating step, so there is nothing to chip or flake under heat.

A roll pin is included, which is worth noting because it is easy to lose the original during a gas tube swap and irritating to source separately. Installation is straightforward for anyone comfortable with AR-platform maintenance. This tube is the mid-length variant; verify your gas block port location before ordering, since the carbine, rifle, and pistol-length versions are not interchangeable with this one.
