Bootleg’s billet upper receiver is built for AR-15 builders who want a cleaner, lighter platform without compromising structural integrity. Machined from 7075 billet aluminum rather than a forging, the receiver starts with material chosen for its strength-to-weight ratio, then finished with MIL-SPEC hard anodizing — a process that penetrates the aluminum surface rather than sitting on top of it, giving the finish genuine abrasion and corrosion resistance rather than cosmetic protection alone.

At 7.2 ounces, this receiver comes in noticeably lighter than a standard mil-spec upper with hardware installed. Bootleg achieves that partly by eliminating the forward assist entirely. The forward assist on a standard upper exists to manually close the bolt when it fails to go fully into battery — a scenario that in most cases signals a more serious malfunction that forcing the bolt closed would only worsen. Removing it cuts weight and eliminates a ledge that can catch on gear during dynamic movement, without taking anything functional away from normal operation.

The brass deflector has been redesigned in a low-profile configuration that serves a secondary purpose: it captures the dust cover door pin directly, so there is no E-clip to install, lose, or replace during maintenance. That detail simplifies both assembly and field cleaning without requiring any non-standard tools or hardware. The barrel extension interface is machined for an interference fit, which reduces the play between barrel and receiver that accumulates over time in looser assemblies and affects where the round enters the chamber. This receiver ships assembled and ready to accept standard AR-15 components and barrel nuts.
