The CMMG Dissent in 9mm is built around a single premise: maximum capability in the smallest possible AR-format package. It is aimed at shooters who want a purpose-built personal defense weapon that runs on Glock magazines and tolerates the full spectrum of 9mm ammunition without requiring careful load selection.

That last point is where the Radial Delayed Blowback operating system earns its place. Standard blowback 9mm AR platforms unlock the bolt the moment chamber pressure is high enough to push it rearward, which works fine but tends to deliver sharp, abrupt recoil — particularly with heavier or hotter loads. CMMG’s radial delayed system introduces a brief mechanical delay before the bolt carrier moves, spreading that impulse over a slightly longer period. The practical result is a more linear push rather than a sharp snap, and the lighter bolt carrier that the design permits contributes to that. A fixed ejector in the upper receiver, rather than a case-deflecting plunger, also allows the system to handle subsonic and supersonic loads consistently without manually adjusting anything.

The forward-mounted, non-reciprocating side charger keeps the charging handle clear of a mounted optic and lets the shooter rack the action without breaking a firing grip or disturbing the sight picture. The 5.5-inch handguard is proprietary to the Dissent upper and is trimmed tight to the short barrel, keeping overall length down. The TriggerTech AR-D is a two-stage trigger developed specifically for the Dissent platform with a four-pound pull weight — CMMG notes that mil-spec and other aftermarket triggers are not guaranteed to function optimally in this upper. Receivers are machined from 7075-T6 aluminum, and the finish on this variant is Armor Black Cerakote. The pistol ships with two 33-round Glock-pattern magazines and a 1913 Picatinny rail end cap that accepts slings and compatible accessories.
