Description
The DD5 V4 in 7.62 NATO is built for shooters who want a purpose-designed semi-automatic precision rifle rather than an AR-15 scaled up for a larger cartridge. It suits long-range hunting, extended-range target work, and any application where the terminal performance of the .308 Winchester family matters more than minimizing weight.
Daniel Defense chambers this rifle in 7.62x51mm NATO and fits it with an 18-inch cold hammer-forged barrel lined with chrome. Hammer forging work-hardens the bore as it is formed, producing a surface that resists throat erosion over sustained round counts — a meaningful advantage for a rifle likely to be fed through a scope at distance. Chrome lining adds a further layer of corrosion resistance and simplifies field cleaning. The barrel carries a Mil-Spec Heavy Phosphate coating externally.
The gas system runs at rifle length, which adds dwell time compared to a mid-length setup and spreads the recoil impulse over a longer cycle — the bolt unlocks later in the pressure curve, which tends to produce a slower, more linear push rather than a sharp spike. This also gives the system enough margin to run reliably when a suppressor is added, aided by a user-adjustable gas block that lets you tune port pressure for suppressed or unsuppressed use without swapping components.
The bolt carrier group on this platform has been refined specifically for the 7.62 cartridge, incorporating a buffer in the carrier itself to moderate cycling forces, along with dual ejectors and revised extractor geometry for consistent case control. The 4-Bolt Connection System between upper and barrel extension is Daniel Defense’s method of reducing the small movements that accumulate into group dispersion over a shooting session. Handguard is the DD5 Rail 15.0, M-LOK compatible and free-floating. The rifle ships without a magazine.
