Description

The MK18 RIII Upper Receiver Group is built around the same short-barreled configuration the military’s special operations community has run for close-quarters work, and it suits a builder who wants that platform assembled to a consistent, known standard rather than specced out part by part. The upper ships as a complete, ready-to-install assembly onto any standard AR-15 lower.

The carbine-length gas system is the central trade-off at this barrel length. Shorter gas systems cycle faster and at higher port pressure than mid-length setups, which at 10.3 inches is simply a function of geometry — there is not enough barrel to run anything longer. The practical result is a snappier impulse that some shooters manage with an adjustable gas block or buffer weight on the lower side of the build. The direct-impingement operating system routes gas back through a pinned low-profile block machined from 4140 steel, keeping the profile slim under the handguard.

The barrel itself is cold hammer forged from chrome moly vanadium steel and chrome lined internally, which extends service life under sustained heat and simplifies cleaning. A 1-in-7-inch twist rate stabilizes heavier projectiles effectively — 62-grain M855 and 77-grain OTM loads both fall well within its optimal range — though very light varmint bullets under 55 grains can occasionally over-stabilize at that rate. The 9.5-inch RIS III handguard uses a six-bolt attachment system and M-LOK slots in place of full-length Picatinny on the sides and bottom, reducing weight while still accepting standard accessories. The bolt carrier group is M16-profile, chrome lined, with a properly staked gas key. The finish throughout is Flat Dark Earth. No sights are included.
