Description

The Daniel Defense RIS III 9.5″ is a free-floating handguard built for shooters who want to run a carbine-length upper in a compact configuration without sacrificing rail real estate or structural rigidity. It traces its lineage directly to the RIS II, a two-piece rail system that U.S. Special Operations Command adopted in 2006, and the RIS III preserves the core architecture of that design while shedding weight and gaining attachment flexibility.

The primary structural change from the RIS II is the shift to M-LOK along the handguard body. Seven M-LOK positions let you place lights, lasers, grips, and other accessories exactly where you need them rather than carrying the weight of full Picatinny sections you may never use. The top rail remains an uninterrupted Mil-Spec 1913 Picatinny platform, so any optic or iron sight with a standard footprint mounts without adapters or offsets. Integral QD swivel attachment points on both sides of the handguard give you mounting options for a sling without adding hardware.

Construction is 6061-T6 aluminum throughout, with a steel barrel nut sized for a carbine gas system. The six-bolt bolt-up system draws the handguard tight against the upper receiver, and because it uses the same barrel nut and bolt-up plate as the RIS II, the RIS III is backward compatible with existing RIS II lower rails — a practical consideration if you are building on or converting a rifle that already carries RIS II components. Grade 8 military-specification fasteners are used throughout the assembly. At just under thirteen ounces, the rail keeps overall build weight in check for a handguard that runs a full 9.5 inches of coverage.
