Primary Weapons Systems built the Enhanced Steel Buffer around a fluted 4140 steel body, a deliberate departure from the aluminum-bodied buffers common in mil-spec kits. The fluting reduces the surface area in contact with the buffer tube interior, which cuts friction and gives debris a path to clear rather than pack between moving surfaces. The FNC LIFE HD surface treatment goes further, slowing the accumulation of carbon and resisting corrosion through extended round counts without requiring the attention a bare steel surface would.
At 4.5 ounces, this is an H2-weight buffer, heavier than a standard carbine buffer. That extra mass decelerates the bolt carrier group later in the firing cycle, which is useful when a rifle is running hotter than the gas system was tuned for—suppressed hosts, short-barreled builds, and rifles with aftermarket gas blocks set to a generous port opening are the common candidates. The trade-off is intentional: slowing the carrier reduces the violence of the rearward stroke, which softens felt recoil and gives the chamber more time to drop to a safer pressure before extraction begins.
The buffer is built to drop into any standard AR-15 or M4 carbine buffer tube without modification. If your rifle is cycling reliably on a standard or H1 buffer but punishing your support hand or short-stroking under suppression, stepping to an H2 is a measured correction rather than a dramatic one—the weight difference is meaningful without being so heavy that it risks failures to feed in a lightly gassed setup.
