Description

The MCX Spear is Sig Sauer’s commercial version of the platform developed for the U.S. Army’s Next Generation Squad Weapon program, and it shows in the engineering priorities: this is a pistol built around full-power .308/7.62 NATO pressure and performance, not a scaled-down compromise. The shooter who wants genuine barrier-defeating capability at short range, or who intends to run a suppressor, will find the Spear’s design assumptions align with those goals in ways a conventional AR-pattern pistol does not.

The two-position adjustable gas valve is central to that suppressor compatibility. Rather than tuning the gas system for a single operating condition, it lets the shooter dial between normal and suppressed firing without a separate adjustment tool or carrier swap — a meaningful practical difference when running a can regularly. The rear and side charging handle arrangement gives the option to work the action without breaking a firing grip or disturbing a mounted optic, which matters on a short-barreled build where rail space is already at a premium.

The 1-in-10-inch twist rate is well-suited to the standard military and commercial .308 bullet weight range, stabilizing 147- to 175-grain projectiles reliably without being so fast that it imposes limitations at the lighter end of the spectrum. The muzzle is threaded 5/8″-24, the correct standard for .30-caliber suppressors and muzzle devices. The receiver is optics ready, so the shooter chooses the glass without working around a fixed iron sight that may or may not cowitness. Ambidextrous controls — including bolt catch and release — mean the platform works without modification for left-handed shooters. One 20-round magazine is included.
