The SureFire X400U is built for shooters who need a single unit to handle both illumination and target marking on a handgun or long gun — without the bulk of running two separate accessories. The white LED outputs 1,000 lumens, which is enough to dominate a close-quarters environment and cause temporary disorientation in a threat at typical engagement distances, while the green laser sits directly below the emitter for a compact package that keeps rail space free for other hardware.

Green is worth the added cost here for a practical reason: the human eye resolves green more readily than red across the visible spectrum, which means the dot is usable in ambient light conditions where a red laser effectively disappears. That daytime visibility comes with a trade-off — green laser diodes are more sensitive to temperature extremes than red, and more expensive to manufacture to a standard that survives recoil and hard use. SureFire’s implementation uses Nylok-equipped adjustment screws so the zero stays put once set, and a included hex wrench handles initial zeroing.

The switch assembly is fully ambidextrous, with paddle activation for both momentary and constant-on use. A selection switch allows the operator to run white light only, laser only, or both simultaneously, and lockout positions at either extreme prevent inadvertent activation. The mounting system uses a slotted screw with a broad head, so a coin or the blade of a multitool is enough to seat or remove the unit — a meaningful difference from the tool-dependent rail systems on some other SureFire weapon lights. The body is machined from aerospace-grade aluminum with a hard-anodized finish and is rated waterproof.
