The CMMG Banshee MK3 in 8.6 Blackout is built for shooters who want a compact, hard-hitting platform capable of taking medium-sized game at close to moderate range or serving as a serious home-defense option. CMMG builds it on their MK3 architecture, which follows the LR-308/DPMS Gen 1 high-pattern design rather than the standard AR-15 footprint — a necessary accommodation for the 8.6 Blackout cartridge’s larger case dimensions.

The 1:3″ twist rate is the defining technical choice here. That extremely fast rotation is engineered specifically around the heavy, long, subsonic projectiles that define the 8.6 Blackout’s purpose. Pushing a conventional or lighter bullet through a 1:3″ twist would overstabilize it; this barrel is optimized for the round, not a general-purpose compromise. Shooters planning to run supersonic loads should verify bullet weight compatibility before settling on a load.

The barrel wears a Black Nitride finish, which penetrates the steel rather than sitting on its surface. That matters in a short-barreled configuration because carbon and fouling accumulate faster at the muzzle end, and a surface coating can be undercut by cleaning; a nitrided bore resists corrosion and wear from the metal itself. The handguard runs 11 inches of M-LOK real estate on the sides and underside, along with M-LOK between the top Picatinny sections, so there is practical room to mount a light, a foregrip, and a sling point without crowding. The ambidextrous safety and optics-ready upper reflect how CMMG intends this to be configured: add a compact optic, mount your accessories, and run it as a purpose-built short package.
