Description

The Geissele Super 42 is a drop-in buffer spring and buffer combo designed for AR-15 carbines running carbine-length receiver extensions. The spring departs from the single-wire coil found in a standard AR-15 by braiding three independent wire strands together, a geometry borrowed from the German MG42 machine gun. Because the three strands can flex relative to one another, the assembly acts as a harmonic damper, absorbing and dispersing the energy pulses that a single-wire spring transfers directly to the shooter as felt recoil and audible twang through the buttstock. The result is a smoother, more controlled cycling motion without any tuning on the shooter’s part.

The spring also maintains a higher average return force than a standard buffer spring, which matters when the rifle is running dirty or when steel-cased ammunition is in use — conditions that increase the friction a round faces being stripped from the magazine. That additional force helps ensure reliable feeding when a clean-running setup might otherwise begin to falter.

One important constraint: the Super 42 spring is dimensioned to fit only the Geissele buffer included in this combo. Running it over a standard buffer risks damage to the receiver extension, so the two components must be used together. The system is also specific to carbine-length buffer tubes and will not function correctly in rifle-length or A5 receiver extensions. Additionally, Geissele advises against pairing the Super 42 with 300 Blackout subsonic loads, where the spring’s return force can overpower the reduced gas impulse and cause malfunctions.
