Description
The Safariland Species is an inside-the-waistband holster built specifically for the S&W Shield EZ9 and Equalizer — two pistols that share a frame geometry distinct from other Shield variants, which is why this holster is not interchangeable with other models in the Shield line. If you carry appendix or need a low-profile IWB option for everyday use, the Species is designed with that context in mind: its minimalist shell removes material in areas where bulk most commonly creates printing or discomfort at the waistband.
Construction uses SafariLaminate, Safariland’s thermal-molded laminate process, with a suede interior lining. The lining serves a dual purpose — it protects the pistol’s finish during repeated draws and reholsters, and it creates enough friction to contribute to a consistent fit without relying entirely on mechanical retention. That retention is handled by an integrated passive trigger guard mechanism, which secures the firearm without requiring a separate release motion. A separate tension adjustment device lets you dial in how much resistance the draw presents, so you can tune the holster to your preference rather than accepting a fixed setting.
The mounting clip is both cant-adjustable and vertically adjustable, which matters for appendix carry where ride height and forward cant angle affect both comfort and draw speed. The clip is sized for standard 1.5-inch belt widths. For shooters running a pistol-mounted optic, the Species accommodates compact optics including the Romeo Zero, RMR CC, Shield RMS and RMS-C, Holosun 407K and 507K, and several others. It is only available in right-hand configuration. Finish is STX Plain in black.
