Description
The SOLGW Castle Nut was originally developed for Sons of Liberty Gun Works’ MK1 rifle and addresses several real shortcomings in standard mil-spec castle nuts. It is machined from 17-4 stainless steel, a grade chosen for its combination of strength and corrosion resistance, then given a nitride treatment that pushes that corrosion resistance further than bare stainless alone would provide. The face is ground flat, which maximizes the bearing surface against an end plate and reduces any tendency for the nut to shift under recoil or repeated thermal cycling.
Six deep staking recesses are cut into the nut rather than the shallow divots found on typical castle nuts. Deeper recesses allow more material to be displaced during staking, which translates directly to greater holding force once the job is done—a castle nut that walks loose under hard use is a real reliability concern, and this design works against that. The rear edges between the drive notches are beveled, which matters during installation and removal if your hand is anywhere near the back of the receiver extension.
The nut is machined to Class 3B thread tolerances, which specifies a tighter fit than the standard Class 2B found on most mil-spec components, resulting in less play at the threaded joint and a more secure connection between the lower and the receiver extension. The nut is also extended beyond standard mil-spec length to add material at the junction of the lower receiver and the buffer tube—a point that can be stressed under hard use. That added length makes it compatible with intermediate and A5-length receiver extensions only; on carbine-length tubes, it may prevent some stocks from reaching their fully collapsed position.
